From a Martinelli family-owned source of fruit, the 2008 Chardonnay Zio Tony Ranch (made famous primarily by John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley) exhibits notes of citrus blossom and white currants as well as a steely minerality. More leesy brioche and waxy notes are also present in this limited production (411 cases), complex Chardonnay, which seems to me the best of the 2008s from Patz and Hall. One of the most reliable negociant firms in all of California is that of Patz and Hall, as the following tasting notes demonstrate. They are spot-on across the board with their generic as well as single-vineyard wines. There is no doubt they have been accessing some of the best single-vineyard sites in California for nearly as long as I have been writing about wine. Patz and Hall now produce eight separate Pinot Noirs, which would make them feel at home working in the Cote d-Or, where most vignerons have at least a half dozen different offerings. Tel. Made in a very ripe, very oaky manner, this Chardonnay is extraordinarily rich now, if not very subtle. It’s all about power. Buttered toast, caramel cream, pineapple marmalade, lime, orange and spice flavors flood the mouth, snapping to an oaky finish. ——S.H.(3/1/2011)—— 88
