The 2018 Merlot Reserve begins with hints of mint, dark cherry and black plum aromas on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is balanced on the palate with an easy-drinking, uncomplicated finish.

With a plummy and oaky core, the 2016 Merlot Reserve opens with a soft juiciness in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is clean, but some of the oak expression stands apart from the wine. Flavors of oak spices linger in the mouth on the slightly tart finish. Just over 2,000 cases were produced.

A straightforward, yet well-made Merlot that offers muted aromas and flavors of black fruits, spice and hints of herbs, the 2010 Merlot Reserve has a supple, balanced palate that holds good acidity, ripe tannin and a clean finish. The Waterbrook 2009 Merlot Reserve smells of maple syrup in its oak-induced meld of caramelized and resinous notes, characteristics, however, that do not upstage the intense impression of ripe cassis. Sweet freesia-like floral notes add a further dimension of sweetness that is complemented by the wine’s satiny texture. This dries out just a bit disappointingly in its finish, almost surely a result of its barrel regime. But the delicious overall effect should be preserved for at least the next couple of years. One of numerous brands under the umbrella a Precept – Washington’s largest privately owned wine company – Walla Walla-based Waterbrook is, on the strength of the two wines to come my way over the past year, a source worthy of further investigation. Though this is pure Merlot, it is structured much like a Cabernet Sauvignon. It shows more depth than breadth, with smoky black fruits, plum and black cherry, and a pleasing purity. It finishes with a distinct herbal edge, slightly bitter. Can it gain a bit of mass with further bottle age? Time will tell. ——P.G.(11/1/2011)—— 89
