The 2015 Macon Vergisson la Roche showed better than a few months ago. It has a rather muted bouquet despite rigorous aeration: stubborn and lacking expression aromatically. The palate is well balanced with much more to say, the acidity well judged and demonstrating quite precise citrus peel, apricot and Granny Smith apple notes. Give this a year in bottle for the aromatics to really open and it should turn into a fine Macon.

The 2013 Macon Vergisson la Roche comes from calcareous soils and sees 15% new oak after being vinified in barrel. It has an airy, detailed nose that just needs a little more intensity to make it memorable. The palate is balanced with touches of sour lemon and lemon sherbet on the entry. The acidity is well-judged and there is a welcome touch of spice on the finish that is just a little more linear than the Monbrison. Very fine.

The 2012 Macon Vergisson la Roche is well-defined on the nose with more terroir expression than the Montbrison. The palate is taut and focused with good weight in the mouth, well-judged acidity and a generous, spicy finish. This is a harmonious Macon-Vergisson that does not contain any fireworks, but you will contentedly finish the bottle.

Lovely. The 2011 Macon-Vergisson La Roche sees 15% new oak. It offers a convincing bouquet of apricot blossom and honeysuckle that is well-defined and demonstrates great lift from the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry. The acidity is well-judged and it fans out to a beautiful apricot and quince tinged finish that is focused and harmonious. Superb. There is little that needs to be written about Verget, the winery of Jean-Marie Guffens that has not already been written. These are fine expressions of Chardonnay that performed to a high standard during my blind tasting sessions at the BIVB. Generally, I used to find a difference between the Verget and Jean-Marie Guffens wines, though tasting them blind, the gap was not as wide as I expected. Importer unknown.
