From the Castelnuovo Berardenga area of Chianti Classico where temperatures are always two or three degrees higher on average, the 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva sees fruit sourced form the estate’s Montebello vineyard n.7, one of the estate’s prized parcels. This vineyard-designate, 100% Sangiovese shows delicate layers of red berry, dried raspberry and soft layers of moist earth and tobacco. The elegance and finesse is stunning, as there’s nothing heavy or out of place with this wine. Neither is this a light or mild wine. It delivers plenty of power and personality both in terms of the quality of the fruit and the long freshness it leaves in the mouth. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva presents the understated side of Sangiovese in its sweet red fruit, freshly cut flowers, licorice and spices. This is a decidedly feminine, graceful wine for the vintage. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva (Sangiovese) shows good density in its dark fruit, leather, tobacco and sweet baking spices. This is already a touch forward and needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later, while the fruit retains its juiciness. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. This is another strong set of wines from Tolaini, an estate that continues to show significant improvement. Pier Luigi Tolaini had previously focused solely on international-styled blends, but in 2008 there is a new Chianti Classico Riserva. The sweet spot in this lineup is with the mid-priced bottlings.
