Coming from the Quintessence and Angela's vineyards on Red Mountain, the 2018 Wild Eyed Syrah is deep magenta at the center with purple highlights and boasts an electric pink rim. Aromas of crème de violette, roasted espresso bean, black pepper and blackberry jus sing in unison from the glass. Full-bodied and generously structured, the palate is juicy yet firm with gripping tannins before giving way to a myriad of black-berried expressions. The Syrah lingers with a slightly boozy finish and a persistent tannic edge. Just under 10,000 bottles were filled after the wine rested for 18 months in 20% new French oak.

Displaying an inky, opaque core with purple highlights on the rim, the 2017 Wild Eyed Syrah opens with blackberry reduction, freeze-dried blueberries, spiced plum compote, fresh violets, subtle oak spice tones and a dustiness on the nose. Full-bodied, the wine is rich and round with a growing spice across the palate showing subtle caramel notes with gripping tannins that support the full-bodied structure of the wine. Showing a dusty and juicy mouthfeel, the wine ends with a long, lingering finish and elevated alcohol expression in the mouth. I recommend serving this just slightly cooler than typical cellar temperature.

The 2016 Wild Eyed Syrah is 100% Syrah, giving it a clean core of black fruit with a soft oak tone, subtle minerality and a mild smokiness. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the wine turns almost tart, with more red fruit expressions coming through the mid-palate. It ends with a fresh dark-fruited finish and has good tannic structure. Just 820 cases made.

The 2015 Wild Eyed Syrah opens in the glass with a sweet bouquet of blackberries, blueberries and subtle black olive. On the palate, it's full-bodied, richly tannic and succulent, with good concentration and lovely purity, concluding with a tangy, penetrating finish. Less marked by new oak than the Olivia Grace bottling, it's not as textural or aromatically dramatic, but more of its varietal character shines through.

The estate's Red Mountain Syrah, the 2014 Wild Eyed Syrah sports an inky color as well as a fabulous bouquet of blackberry, smoked earth, licorice and charred meat. Full-bodied, fresh and elegant, with impeccably purity and balance, it too needs a touch more breadth, yet has solid mid-palate depth and sweet tannin. Like all these 2014 releases, it has the class and purity to drink great now, yet I suspect will be better with a year or two in bottle.
