The Frescobaldi 2016 Mormoreto is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and lots of Tuscan sunshine. The wine is round and rich, imparting thick layers of dark fruit, plum and black cherry. On the finish, it follows up with spice, tar, licorice and sweet tobacco. You get a lot of dark fruit and vinous bang in this bottle.

This wine follows its own distinct philosophy that marries it into the school of super Tuscan wines, and not the Chianti Rufina appellation where it is born. The 2013 Mormoreto is a bend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that seems intent on escaping from its small town roots. It shows much bigger aspirations. This is a thick and succulent red wine with dark plum, blackberry, chocolate and exotic spice. The mouthfeel is lasting and powerful.

An IGT blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the IGT 2011 Mormoreto is not totally balanced compared to the excellent 2010 vintage that precedes it. The wine opens to a brooding, dark color with heavy oak tones of spice and dark chocolate that make it difficult to identify the underlying fruit. A few more years of bottle aging should help integrate the wood.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from the stunningly beautiful Castello di Nipozzano property just a short drive from Florence, the 2010 Mormoreto is a massive and impenetrable wine. ark black/inky color characterizes its appearance and the wine peels back, layer after thick layer, to reveal prune, dark plum, bitter chocolate, toasted espresso, sweet spice and cinnamon. The plushness of the fruit and the richness of the texture are monumental. It-s almost too much of a good thing. The 2009 Mormoreto wraps around the palate with dark cherries, plums, mocha, espresso and licorice. There is plenty of depth and richness in the fruit, but the tannins aren’t as polished as they could be. It does not appear this fruit has the intrinsic depth to handle 24 months in French oak.
