The 2010 Echezeaux is stunningly beautiful. I am not sure where the wine starts and ends. It just orbits in a very special place where all of the elements are beautifully balanced. Finely knit layers of dark red fruit, spices and mint are just some of the notes that emerge from the glass. But the Echezeaux is not about aromas or flavors, it is really much more about textural elegance and finesse. This is a dazzling showing. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. I tasted an amazing range of 2010 reds at Jadot with long-term winemaker Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier. In order to make this large section of the report easier to read, I have broken up the wines into the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits. Lardiere and Barnier told me they were quite worried about the prospects for the harvest upon their return from summer vacations in August, but the year was saved by a perfect September. Yields are down 25-50% because of the frost and cold weather earlier in the year, but overall quality is very high. Lardiere and Barnier also noted that early on it appeared that there would be a wide gap in quality between the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuits, but over time that gap narrowed to some extent. Still, there is little question the vintage was more challenging in the Cote de Beaune because of a rainier summer and overall higher precipitation throughout the year.Importer: Kobrand Corp., Purchase, NY; tel. The 2009 Echezeaux is totally seamless and inviting. The aromas and flavors build beautifully in the glass in this radiant, expressive wine. Sweet, silky tannins frame the voluminous finish. The exotic, spiced personality of Echezeaux is captured beautifully here. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. I tasted an impressive range of wines with Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier, who is slated to take over when Lardiere retires at the end of 2012. Jadot makes a mind-bending number of wines, but I limited myself to the best 35 or so examples. In 2009 Jadot began harvesting on September 6. All of the reds were made from 100% destemmed fruit. Maceration times varied from wine to wine, but according to Lardiere all of the wines were made with essentially the same approach. Lardiere is another of the producers who compares 2009 to 1959, and believes the wines will age well because of their density of fruit and minerality. Many of the estate’s own vineyards are farmed biodynamically, but of course Jadot also sources a significant amount of wine from other growers that is not necessarily from biodynamically farmed vineyards.Importer: Kobrand Corp., Purchase, NY; tel. The 2008 Echezeaux is a deep, powerful Burgundy imbued with layers of dark, earthy fruit. Tar, licorice and smoke follow, adding an element of gravitas. The aromas and flavors swirl around beautifully in the glass as the wine continues to open up. This is another fabulous showing from Jadot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.
