A tank-aged blend of fruit from Mauve and Sarras, the 2020 Saint-Joseph Deschants features notes of crushed stone, raspberries, cherries and even a hint of violets. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and silky, with a finish that seems to fall off a bit quickly. Drink it young.

Blended from fruit taken from around Mauve and Sarras and aged in concrete, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Deschants offers up hints of crushed stone and ripe, plummy fruit underscored by a sense of granitic restraint. Atypically full-bodied and concentrated, it's rich, velvety and easy to drink yet should age well for up to a decade.

Black cherries and crushed-stone aromas are joined by blueberries and hints of cracked pepper in the 2018 Saint-Joseph Deschants. This is atypically full-bodied and concentrated for this cuvée, showing all the glory of the vintage, wrapped in soft, ripe tannins and lingering on the finish.

Typically one of the better values in the Chapoutier lineup, the 2017 Saint-Joseph Deschants (made mostly from purchased grapes) continues in that mold, offering consumers a spicy, mineral-laced red with immediate appeal, yet it has the ability to improve for several years. Scents of crushed stone and black olives are buffered by some dark cherry notes in this medium-bodied wine that remains true to its mostly granitic roots—firm, reserved and even a bit austere. Aging is in concrete (60%) and old demi-muids (40%).

Marked by scents of crushed stone and black olives, the 2016 Saint-Joseph Deschants is a super value in the context of Northern Rh?ne Syrah, offering ample weight and concentration combined with near-term drinkability. It's medium to full-bodied, plump yet firm, with sufficient fine-grained tannins on the long finish to suggest a decade of aging potential.
