An attractive, racy barolo with note of red plums and cherries as well as hints of walnuts, dried flowers and fresh mushrooms. Chalky and lightly chewy on the palate with a medium body and bright acidity coming through. Notes of nut shell and spices with some savory character at the end. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Try after 2026.

A dense, beefy red, with the main flavors of cherry and plum complemented by menthol and leather. Tightens up on the finish, where the fruit is wrapped in a cloak of tannins. Best from 2026 through 2045. 1,000 cases made, 250 cases imported.??–BS??Region: Italy / Piedmont / Barolo Select to Add

This red is polished to a sheen of cherry, plum, licorice and menthol up front, while the resonant tannins move in by the finish. All the components are in the right place, and this ends with echoes of fruit and savory notes. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, this is the most structured and ultimately my favorite wine in this grouping from Fontanafredda. The 2017 Barolo Fontanafredda Vigna la Rosa shows a soft and glossy quality of fruit, with wild berry, cassis, tar, licorice and tarry smoke. You sense more power and concentration here, with mineral notes of iron and dusty earth. Give this wine a few more years to flesh out and take on additional volume. Some 12,000 bottles were made.
