The 2006 Castell de Falset is a blend of 50% old vine Garnacha, 25% Carinena and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 12 months in new French oak. It has a ripe, toasty bouquet with blackberry and scorched earth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity on the entry, but pinched black earthy fruit leads to an abrupt, terse finish. The purple-colored 2005 Castell de Falset is composed of 50% Carinena, 25% Garnacha, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 12 months in French oak. The alluring nose offers up wood smoke, mineral, underbrush, blueberry, and black cherry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced wine with serious depth, loads of spicy, savory fruit, and a masculine personality. Purple-colored, it has a superb bouquet, of cedar, mineral, scorched earth, pencil lead, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to an intensely flavored, sweetly-fruited, plush wine with incipient complexity and elegance. This rustic blend of 45% Grenache, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Tempranillo, aged in tank as well as American and French oak, reveals plenty of sweet fruit, a fleshy character, not a great deal of complexity, but good roundness, lovely ripeness, and copious kirsch, black currant, and berry fruit flavors.
