The lovely, low-key Morey-Blanc 2006 Saint-Aubin Les Pucelles hails from a strip of the appellation so far south and up into the hills that it is as close to the Cote Chalonnaise as to Puligny. The wine seems to reflect its high-elevation, poor soil, and southern exposure in its combination of creamy texture and underlying richness with delicacy and distinctive minerality. Herbed butter, narcissus, lemon, and chalk dust on the nose usher in a polished palate with chalk and salt accents which linger in a bright, savory finish. Alongside his domaine, Pierre Morey (who recently retired as cellar master from Domaine Leflaive) has operated since 1992 a negociant arm. Morey-Blanc offers a considerable array of wines, given that fruit is purchased from fewer than 10 acres of vines. The original incentive for this venture was to replace the great Meursault premier crus long on the Domaine Pierre Morey roster after the expiration in 1991 of Morey’s rental contracts for property owned by the Comte Lafon.
