Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Reversees, Beaune 1er Cru, France

The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversés bursts with aromas of rose petals, blood orange, sweet berry fruit, plums and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, lively and charming, with refined tannins and a saline finish, Rossignol notes that his holdings in this climat derive from much stonier soils than those of his friend Thomas Bouley.

Aromas of dark chocolate, blackberries, candied peel and rich soil tones introduce the 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversés, a medium to full-bodied wine with a generous core of fruit, tangy acids and fine, chalky tannins. The suppleness of its attack contrasts with its more tensile mid-palate and finish. This hails from a site at the foot of the Beaune hillside on the Pommard side.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversés was 100% destemmed this year. It has a more understated bouquet compared to other 2016s from Rossignol, perhaps the oak showing more too. The palate is clean and ripe, quite assertive in the mouth with a muscular structure that needs to develop more finesse. Hopefully its brutishness will abate once in bottle.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversées is 100% de-stemmed, because the soil is more chalky and stony compared to say Thomas Bouley's, which is more clayey. It has a neatly composed, well-defined bouquet with plenty of dark berry fruit blossoming with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, very well-judged acidity and a sense of symmetry on the energetic and tensile finish. This is an excellent wine from Nicolas Rossignol.

The 2013 Beaune 1er Cru les Reversées has a very pure bouquet with blackberry and boysenberry notes with satisfactory detail. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of black fruit, perhaps just a little too smooth in texture for my liking. I would just like to see a little more edginess come through in 2015 (since 2014 will be blended as a premier cru due to hail damage.)
