The 2013 Chardonnay H3 is A solid effort, as well as a terrific value. It has real Chardonnay character in its aromas of buttered apples, brioche and spice, and this medium-bodied, supple, lively and highly drinkable white finishes clean, dry and nicely focused. It has good richness and freshness, and should drink nicely for a year or two.

The 2009 Chardonnay Horse Heaven Hills (a mere 36,000 cases) was 75% barrel-fermented with 75% of the wine going through malolactic fermentation. It was aged sur lie in barrel for 9 months with batonnage. Toasty tropical aromas lead to a spicy, savory, well-balanced, lengthy Chardonnay that is an excellent value meant for drinking over the next 2-3 years. Columbia Crest, part of the Ste. The 2008 Chardonnay Horse Heaven Hills is a bit more serious. Forty percent was barrel-fermented in new oak, 30% in seasoned barrels with the balance in stainless steel. Like the Grand Estates, it was aged for 6-9 months sur lie with weekly batonnage. It gives up aromas of buttered popcorn, pear, spiced apple, and mineral leading to a smooth-textured, ripe Chardonnay with very good volume and concentration.
