Aged entirely in new oak barrels, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe offers up striking aromas of menthol, cedar, black cherries and raspberries. A blend of 40% Grenache and 30% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, it's full-bodied, rich, concentrated, velvety and long. I wish there was more complexity, but it's an excellent wine, with plenty of fruit, plenty of oak and plenty of flavor.

An equal-parts blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah aged in new barriques, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe is sourced from several different soil types and lieux-dits. Dark in color, with overtones of vanilla and cedar, it's moderately concentrated, with black cherries and raspberries underscored by velvety wood tannins that linger on the finish. It's a thoroughly modern wine, full-bodied, ripe and rich but not overly complex in the end.

The same blend as in the Cuvée Peur Bleue but raised in all new barriques, La Gardine's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe offers up toasty, cedar aromas layered atop cola and dried spices. It's admirably full-bodied and velvety in texture, but it's also a bit generic because of the heavy oaking, finishing dry and dusty.

A terrific effort from the team at La Gardine, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe boasts incredible aromas of allspice and mulberries. It's a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 30% Mourvèdre matured in new barriques, but the oak is barely noticeable. This full-bodied wine is creamy on the mid-palate and then firmly tannic on the long finish, so give it some time in the cellar before popping a cork.

The 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Générations Gaston Philippe has terrific richness in its heady black and blue fruits, crushed pepper and mint-laced aromatics. One of the few full-bodied wines in the vintage, it has solid mid-palate depth, a mouth-filling, layered texture and a great finish. Made from equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre that spent ten months in new French oak barrels, it has the fruit to drink nicely on release, yet the concentration to evolve over a decade.
