The limited production 1997 Chardonnay Alder Springs is made from Dijon Clone 76 (a clone known for extremely small berries and tiny clusters). This hillside vineyard (at an elevation of 1,400 feet) has produced just two barrels of wine for Patz and Hall, which was aged in 100% new oak. A spectacular Chardonnay (my notes read "profound stuff"), it offers a striking liquid minerality in its citrusy, honeyed nose, as well as notes of flower blossoms, verveine, and smoky new oak. It was bottled unfiltered. This is a blockbuster, complex, thrilling Chardonnay for enjoying over the next 2-3 years. Bravo! This high quality producer owns no vineyards, but is obviously exploiting some of the finest sources for fruit on California's North Coast. There are 7,200 cases of sumptuous, Burgundian-styled Chardonnays that will be big hits with consumers. Tel. (707) 963-4142; Fax (707) 963-9713
