The top wines from Fonterutoli are the Siepi (a 50% Sangiovese/50% Merlot blend), and the Concerto (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese). The 1994 Concerto exhibits a saturated opaque purple color, and an intense yet youthful and unevolved cassis-dominated aroma interspersed with scents of vanillin, roasted nuts, cedar, and tobacco. Full-bodied, and broodingly deep, rich, and powerful, this is a persuasive, young, unevolved, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that has been aged in a high percentage of new French oak. Given its high tannin level and grapy, unevolved personality, this wine needs another 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2014.
Fonterutoli is one of Tuscany's most reliable producers of Chianti and proprietary red wines - the so-called Vino da Tavolas. Five of six wines performed well in my tastings.
