The 2008 Sagrantino di Montefalco is a big, rustic wine loaded with dark red cherries, smoke, licorice and tar. There is good intensity in the fruit, but the tannins remain a bit rough around the edges. Lungarotti’s wines from Montefalco have improved over the last few years, but remain works in progress. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Lungarotti is one of Umbria’s most historic wineries. A dark, sappy red, mixing blackberry, cassis, licorice and game notes on a full-bodied frame, with strong tannins and fresh acidity providing ample structure for the dark, tarry finish.
