Another highlight is the 2010 Pinot Noir Doctor’s Vineyard, which simply explodes from the glass with huge, dark red fruit. This is one of the richer wines in the lineup, but everything is in the right place. Spices, menthol, pine and dark red cherries flesh out in this radiant Pinot. This is easily one of the most distinctive Pinots being made in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The Pinot was grafted onto existing Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot vines, which may explain some of the wine’s uniqueness. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
This is a gorgeous set of wines from Testarossa. Owners Rob and Diana Jensen bring the same entrepreneurial, risk-taking approach to winemaking they learned in the high-tech world, and the results are terrific. I have to say, the Jensens’ approach, which seeks long-term success by allowing experimentation and the occasional failure that is an essential part of learning, is immensely refreshing in a world where so much is done by following formulas and copying the work of others. Bill Brosseau, whose family owns the Brosseau vineyard, makes the wines.
