Clarendon Hills' red wines are about as decadent and rich as red wine can get. The 1996 Merlot offers a thick, juicy, full-bodied blast of black cherry fruit intertwined with notes of chocolate and earth. Unctuously-textured and pure, not overdone, yet clearly massive, this soft, opulently-styled Merlot can be drunk now or cellared for a decade. This is one of my favorite Australian wineries and readers who have followed my reviews know of my enthusiasm for recent vintages of the Old Vine Grenache, Astralis, and Merlot. I have not reviewed any Clarendon Hills Chardonnays because I am not fond of oxidized, earthy Chardonnays.Importer: Australian Premium Wine Collection, (John Larchet), USA Wine West, San Rafael, CAphone: (800)-485-5753, and Chicago Brands, Chicago, IL; tel.
