From middle-aged vines Patrick Landanger acquired in 2004, his Pousse d’Or 2006 Puligny-Montrachet Le Cailleret smells pungently of pink grapefruit rind, toasted hazelnuts, and chalk dust. Remarkably refreshing for a wine of its richness of texture and overly chalky minerality, this displays a long finish, cool in its suggestions of sweetly aromatic herbs, citrus, and stone, along with bitter-sweet notes of toasted nuts, apricot kernel, vanilla bean, licorice, and citrus zest. A strongly mineral yet exuberant expression of a grand cru-quality vineyard, it should be fascinating to follow for at least 6-8 years.
