The 1982 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is showing very nicely today, offering up a deep bouquet of wild berries, smoked meats, forest floor and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, deep and surprisingly muscular for a 1982, I imagine Potel performed a saignée here and did whatever he could to build structure and extract into the wine, given the very high yielding, open-knit style of the vintage. If it's unusually serious for a 1982, however, this Caillerets is also a little rustic, so I think it will always rank as a good rather than a great rendition of this cuvée.
