Renowned for its fine Chardonnays and superb Cabernet Sauvignon (unquestionably among the ten best from California), Chateau Montelena also produces high quality Zinfandel that tends to be ignored because of all the hoopla over their other wines. Not surprisingly, the 1990 Estate Zinfandel is a large-scaled, spicy, fleshy Zinfandel with gobs of fruit, plenty of alcohol, and fine underlying depth. Drinking lusciously now, its best years should be between now and 2000. There are soft tannins, an unctuous, chewy mouth-feel and gobs of berry, peppery fruit.
