Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1996 Gaia opens with a lovely sandalwood, menthol, mocha and dried mulberry nose with a touch of figs and mushrooms. Medium-bodied, crisp and framed by a medium level of velvety tannins, it gives great fruit concentration through the long finish. Drink it now to 2017+. The 1996 Gaia (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot) is a layered, well-focused, backward wine. Deep ruby/purple-colored, it offers a moderately intense nose of sweet toasty oak and cassis. Layered, with the emphasis on elegance and finesse as opposed to pure weight and power, this rich, deep, Bordeaux-like blend should be at its finest between 2001-2014.
