Zind-Humbrecht is synonymous with fabulous Tokay. It reaches Montrachet-like dimensions of power, texture, and aromatic as well as flavor intensity when made by this estate. If you can latch onto any of the handful of bottles that make it into the United States, do not miss the chance to try the 1991 Tokay Clos St. Urbain Rangen, made from one of the most extraordinary white wine vineyards in the world. The steep slopes, composed of volcanic soil, serve as home to old vines that produce an unctuously textured, unbelievably rich Tokay with a huge nose of honeyed fruit. There is layer upon layer of rich fruit, crisp acidity, and fabulous density, definition, and length. This wine was made of yields of only 20 hectoliters per hectare, which is about one-fourth to one-fifth of what many growers in Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet obtain! If past efforts are indicative, this wine will need 3-5 years to open; it has the potential to last for up to 20. As extraordinary as the 1989 and 1990 Zind-Humbrecht wines are, the 1991s, largely because of the difficulties presented by the vintage, are even more amazing. Readers must keep in mind that for the top Alsatian producers the situation is much like that in Burgundy - only tiny quantities of wine available. Between 50 and 150 cases of each wine is the entire allocation for the American market.I do not ever remember a producer in a so-so year making such magnificent wines!
