Revealing a saturated opaque purple color, the 2001 Shiraz The Aberfeldy (from a vineyard planted in 1904) exhibits notes of eucalyptus intermixed with blackberries, loamy soil, and spice. Deep, full-bodied, rich as well as elegant, it displays good delineation and acidity in addition to abundant tannin. Give it 1-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 10-15. A 100% Shiraz, from a vineyard established in 1904 by the Birks family, the same family that established Wendouree. Has toasty, meaty notes on the nose—an appropriate preamble to the grilled meat and black plum flavors on the palate.
