Not unlike the 1964, the 1961 has better color, but a coarser texture, and enough signs to indicate that it was in its prime in the early seventies. The complex, aged bouquet of roasted fruit and nuts is classy, but on the palate, the wine does not deliver the expected richness and depth that characterize this vintage. A bottle tasted in 1989 had more fruit, yet still did not impress me to the extent I would have thought given the vintage. Nevertheless, this is a very good rather than great Domaine de Chevalier. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 11/89.

Tasted from magnum. A distinct personality marks this firmly textured, densely layered Graves. It has herbal, toasty aromas, lively yet well-developed fruit flavors and a lingering finish. Has life ahead of it.--1961 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now through 2005. -
