The 2008 Lapa Cabernet Sauvignon has a clean, crisp nose of blackberry, cedar and a touch of espresso that is guarded at first but opens up with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, rounded, fleshy entry and ripe strawberry, Morello cherry and just a touch of spice towards the well-balanced finish that perversely feels more like a Merlot than a Cabernet. This is a well-made wine that cunningly disguises its 15% alcohol. Drink now-2015. Guardian Peak was founded by Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede in the late 1990’s and Philip van Staden is the present winemaker. Grapes are imported and vinified at their winery in Stellenbosch that opened in 2005. They offer dependable wines at decent prices.Importer: Terlato Wines International, NJ. 201-659-4712.

Powerfully rendered, with dark fig, plum and blackberry fruit dripping over racy graphite and apple wood notes. The long finish lets the graphite edge stretch out, while a Kenya AA coffee note chimes in the background. Impressive.
