This fine winery has an enviable track record. Nothing that emerges from Matanzas Creek is less than excellent, with their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Merlot among the finest California can produce. Matanzas Creek's Chardonnay is always 100% barrel-fermented, put through a 100% malolactic fermentation, and is given considerable aging on its lees. Matanzas Creek is producing limited quantities (about 200 cases) of an extravagantly priced, super-rich Chardonnay called Journey. The 1992 Journey is a thick, viscous, super-concentrated wine with lavish quantities of oak, outrageous unctuousness and richness of fruit, and amazingly fine balance. Price aside, it is an exceptional Chardonnay that delivers the goods.
