Matanzas Creek is a laudable winery in every respect. While everything that emerges is of the highest quality level, Matanzas Creek has established itself as a reference point winery for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Merlot.
Matanzas Creek has released 300 cases of the 1990 Chardonnay-Journey. From a qualitative perspective, it is a complex, hazelnut and buttery-scented wine with enormous richness, superb purity, full body, and a long finish. My instincts suggest it should drink well for 1-2 years. However, the going rate for Chardonnays of this quality level and rarity is $30-$40 a bottle -not $70. A top quality wine is unquestionably expensive to make, but the price asked for this wine is indefensible.
