The 2009 LEFKOS “DOMAINE HATZIMICHALIS” is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (51%), Robola (34%) and Malagousia (15%), coming in at just 12.5% alcohol, fermented in stainless steel. Grassy, herbaceous and aromatic, as befits the Sauvignon Blanc dominated blend, it is perky, refreshing and tasty, too, perfect for early consumption and warm weather. Unlike the Lefkos “fine classic,” reviewed this issue, this relies on an international grape rather than Greek ones for its principal component, but this winery has a good touch with Sauvignon Blanc. Delicate and aromatic, this was attractive on opening and as it warmed up. It is not imported into the USA at this time. It should show best young and is at peak now as it might decline fairly quickly as time goes on. Drink now-2012. Hatzimichalis makes a wide variety of brands, and dabbles extensively in international grapes like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They have a pretty nice touch with those grapes—although I thought their Chards were a bit better in the last round of reviews. I’m sure they will take flack for their focus on international grapes rather than indigenous ones. The lower level wines are usually very nice values, though.
