From a very cool site, the 2010 Syrah Ampelos Vineyard is a blend of 100% Syrah that was aged in 30% new French oak and the balance in neutral French and American oak. Very classy and with excellent purity, it delivers deep blackberry, pepper, hints of game, earth and some herb aromas and flavors to go with a medium-bodied, supple palate. There is a lot of acid here and the finish could use more length, yet it still delivers solid fruit and a drinkable feel. Enjoy it over the coming 5-6 years. Drink now-2019.

The 2010 Syrah Ampelos Vineyard is another stunning wine from Jaffurs. A dark, sumptuous beauty, the Ampelos flows with the essence of dark plums, violets, tar and licorice, all supported by persistent veins of underlying minerality. Sweet, perfumed notes round out the finish. The 2010 stands out for the way it brings together expressive aromatics and textured fruit, all in a gorgeous, beautifully balanced style with tons of appeal. Jaffurs has done a fabulous job with the Ampelos, their coldest Syrah site. Only 6 of a potential 14 barrels were bottled. The 2010 spent 10 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Drinking window: 2013 – 2020

Jaffurs ventures west of their usual haunt in the Santa Ynez Valley to source fruit from this cool-climate site in the Santa Rita Hills. The result is their most brisk, tart Syrah. But it shows the winery‘s signature authority, with richly textured blackberry, black pepper, Dr. Pepper cola, crisped bacon and smoky oak flavors. Superb and delicious for drinking now.
