Opaque ruby/purple in color, the 2008 Syrah Ampelos Vineyard, from the cool-climate Santa Rita Hills region, displays wonderful floral, blackberry, charcoal, and camphor notes, with some background earth and spice. Rich and chewy, full-bodied, and loaded, this is a big, back-strapping Syrah that will benefit from another year or two of bottle age. It should keep for 10-12+ years.

So delicious, so drinkably good, it defines the beauty of great coastal Syrah. A bit high in alcohol, but the heat fits in well beside the white and black pepper notes, and gives a lift to the vast blackberry, cassis, bacon and sandalwood flavors.
