Sarmassa is not one of the better known vineyards of Barolo, but I have always been impressed by the better wines of the cru, and this 2000 Barolo Sarmassa is certainly in that category. The powerful aromas of wild cherries, red currants, and tobacco are very fresh and balsamic, the palate very full-bodied and rich, and the finish very sustained and intense. The 2000 Barolo Sarmassa (magnum) is another utterly impeccable, layered wine of the highest level. A melange of ripe red fruit, spices, flowers and mint literally explodes on the palate as this beautifully centered, poised wine shows its class and pedigree. All the aromas and flavors are woven in a rich tapestry of indescribable elegance. This is a dazzling Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. Roberto Voerzio’s 2000s are among the most successful wines of the vintage. That’s not terribly surprising given Voerzio’s virtually unparalleled track record of making profound wines that can age, even in the smallest of vintages. The 2000s are only now beginning to approach their early maturity. These remain beautiful, fresh Baroli that will deliver considerable pleasure for years to come.
