The 1980 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers had a mature, autumnal bouquet with roasted chestnut and decayed leaf aromas infusing the red berry fruit. There is something loamy that appears with continued aeration--never a powerful bouquet but pleasant. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, notes of truffle and black pepper sprinkled over the light black fruit. More masculine than I would have expected, yet surprisingly persistent in the mouth, this Les Gruenchers is fully mature but has the substance to suggest it will give another 8-10 years of pleasure. Tasted November 2016.
