The two finest red wines I have yet tasted from The Ojai Vineyard are the two 1994 offerings of Syrah. The 1994 Syrah Santa Barbara smells like a terrific Hermitage. A huge, dramatic nose of bacon fat, smoke, and jammy black fruits is followed by a dense, full-bodied, layered wine crammed with ripe fruit. Its creamy texture, sumptuous thickness, lushness, and admirable purity combine to give this full-bodied, flamboyant Syrah a compelling character. I suspect there is more tannin than the wine is currently revealing. This is a mouthfilling, gorgeously proportioned, well-endowed Syrah to drink over the next 10-12 years.
