The 2002 Syrah Rosella’s Vineyard (293 cases) may be controversial due to its provocative perfume of dried Provencal herbs, aged beef, and forest floor giving it an undeniably individual character. Like all of Novy’s offerings, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered, and thus possesses a big, fleshy mouthfeel and plenty of chewiness. While it appears to include abundant Mourvedre and Grenache, it is in fact 100% Syrah. Structured, with an austere finish, my instincts suggest there is more to it than is currently detectable. If you enjoy pungent, provocative aromatic displays, you’ll appreciate it even more.
