The low-yielding (35 hl/ha), late-harvested 2011 Saumur Champigny Franc de Pied comes from a high-density planting of 10,000 ungrafted, biodynamically farmed Cabernet Franc vines per hectare rooting in calcareous sandy/loamy soils. Made from whole bunches that were fermented spontaneously in concrete and in oval wooden barrels, the wines shows a dark cherry color with purple reflections and reveals a deep, noble, well-balanced chalky bouquet of ripe dark berries, raspberries, cherries, coffee and a dash of citrus. This lovely concentrated, medium-bodied, neither fined nor filtered Saumur Champigny is intense, very well-balanced, elegant and fresh. It has aromatic, juicy-meaty fruit with an animating dash of limes on the palate as well as ripe and refined tannins. Already accessible, you can also store it for another four or 14 years.
