The 2022 Chardonnay is traditionally a blend of clones and blocks across the property. There's 277, 95, 76 and Gin Gin, all from different places on the property and each providing its own complexity and spectrum of flavor and texture. As a result, the wine is svelte and complex, smooth and silky, and it speaks of grapefruit, peach, preserved citrus and brine. Very good! The acid is fresh from this warm year, and the fruit wraps around the tongue like a glove. The phenolics through the finish save the fruit—not that the fruit needs saving! But the fruit is round and ripe, and the phenolics give it a much needed edge and savory nudge. Exciting. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

2020 was a crazy season in Margaret River, and by extension, Western Australia, although there was wide variation. In Margaret River, it was warm and very early, with tiny yields. Overall, the quality has been excellent, although the wines certainly show the warmth of the season in their ripe, voluptuous fruit profiles. This 2020 Chardonnay is precisely that; the warmth of the season coupled with the malolactic fermentation (undergone on the Dijon clone components) means this is creamy, nutty and rich—even verging on broad through the finish. This is a combination of seven vineyard blocks, utilizing clones 95, 96, 76 and Gingin, all fermented wild in French oak (36% new). Some parcels (Dijon clones) underwent malolactic fermentation to mitigate the acidity. The wine matured for nine months in barrique, with regular batonnage. This is looking more tropical and developed since the last time it was tasted, hinting that perhaps it may be even shorter lived than originally thought. Pleasure for now is key.

A 50-50 blend of Dijon clones (which go through malolactic fermentation) and Gingin clone (which doesn't), the 2017 Chardonnay was aged in about 35% new French oak and hints at toasted cashews, then adds flavors of apple, pineapple and white peach. It's medium-bodied and silky in texture, with just a hint of tannin marking the finish.
