The 2020 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne uses a portion of fruit from the ancient La Crena vineyard with vines planted in 1932. The rest of the fruit comes from the Agliano area of Asti (in the Nizza wine growing area). This is a ripe expression with dried prune and sweet raisin. The heat of the vintage is transmitted through the baked and sweet-smelling aromas present here. It shows a high 15% alcohol content and a rich, velvety texture. Production is 35,000 bottles.

This more accessible expression shows lots of dark cherry and blackberry that just sits there, pretty in the glass. There is a soft sweetness or creaminess to the fruit that ultimately caresses the palate.

Despite the deep concentration and richness of the 2017 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne, the freshness is still there. The three vineyard parcels Vietti farms in Asti go into this wine of impressive depth. Yes, this was one of the hottest vintages in a decade for Barbera d'Asti, but it still shows more acidity than the estate’s Barbera d'Alba. This wine is rustic and raw with plenty of structure. Originally planted in 1932 and 1935, they bought these vineyards in 1995 and replanted many in 1996, with fruit from the old vines going into their special La Crena selection. Some 35,000 bottles were made.
