The 2005 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne is perhaps a little more linear than it sibling from Alba, but it offers greater complexity in its sweet dark fruit, with a persistent note of minerality that gives the wine length and a clean, refreshing finish. Best of all, this Barbera is one of the great values in Piedmont wines today. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2009. Vietti is one of the most historic properties in Piedmont. The estate is best known for its top-flight Barolos, yet in recent years I have been equally impressed with the entry-level wines. These are among the finest wines being made anywhere in Italy. A successful showing for this 2005 Barbera; although at first it showed some interesting complexity, but was short on fruit. Over the next ten minutes, the fruit began to come through, and mixed with pencil lead and a touch of oak. Likeable, it has a big, happy chunky personality and seems tailor made for a good, charred ribeye straight from the barbecue. ——M.G.(12/22/2011)—— 87
