A solid step up over the 2013, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Domaine de Vieille Fontaine has a terrific nose of ripe black and blue fruits, violets and assorted floral nuances. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, even seamless 2015 that has outstanding purity and ripe tannin. I like it, and while I'm sure it will drink nicely right out of the gate, it should keep for 5-6 yeas as well.

From a selection of older Grenache vines, the 2013 Cotes du Rhone Villages Domaine de Vieille Fontaine is similar to the straight Cotes du Rhone Villages and has bright acidity and medium-bodied richness, as well as attractive notes of plums, violets and spice box. It has solid tannic grip on the finish and I suspect, will have a decade of longevity, although I see no need to hold off either.

Even better, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Villages Domaine de La Vieille Fontaine, which is the same blend/elevage as the ’11, gives up a complex, layered and interesting profile, with notions of black cherry, leather, wild herbs and underbrush all giving way to a medium+-bodied, rich and beautifully balanced feel on the palate. It’s a solid bottle of wine and will have a total of 6-8 years of longevity. A step up over both the Cotes du Rhone and the Cotes du Rhone Village releases, the 2011 Cotes du Rhone Village Domaine de La Vieille Fontaine (80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre) is a single vineyard release that was aged all in tank and foudre. Offering up impressive notes of plum, blackberry, underbrush and earth, with some nutty nuances coming through with air, this medium+-bodied effort has loads of texture, good tannin and a clean, dry finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Enjoy it over the coming 5-6 years.
