A release of about 3,300 bottles, the Schiopetto 2017 Podere dei Blumeri is an equal-parts blend of Merlot and Refosco that shows terrific balance and a bright, fruit-forward presentation. The wine displays candied fruit aromas with cherry, blackcurrant, plum, spice and bitter chocolate. In terms of appearance, it displays a bright ruby color with bluish hues. There is plenty of fresh, sweet berry fruit on the close that gives this wine great appeal straight out of the gate. This is a great burger wine.

The 2006 Podere dei Blumeri Rosso is a big, opulent wine loaded with succulent dark blackberries, blueberries, wild herbs and French oak. This wine possesses terrific depth and richness in a full-bodied, dense style. Ideally it needs a few years in bottle for all of the elements to come together, but it is already quite promising. Mint, minerals and licorice add complexity on the close. The Rosso is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Refosco from vineyards in the Colli Orientali appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2011. This is a beautiful set of new releases from the Schiopetto family. The 2008 whites are decidedly ripe and opulent, but also beautifully balanced. The 2005 Podere dei Blumeri Rosso is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso grown on the estate’s recently purchased property in the Colli Orientali district, a part of Friuli that is particularly well-suited to reds. The wine reveals a fragrant bouquet of raspberry jam, spices and sweet toasted oak, along with menthol, mineral and sweet herb nuances that develop in the glass. This medium-bodied, sleek red possesses terrific density and depth. Another year or so of bottle age should help the oak settle down a bit. This is a terrific effort from Schiopetto. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. The 2007 vintage was challenging for whites as the warm growing season hindered the development of aromatics in many varieties, leaving quite a few wines with a feeling of heaviness, as these bottlings attest.
