There are no records for Grandes Reservas from Rioja Vega in our database, and this year I tasted two. Starting with the 2009 Gran Reserva, from one of the earliest harvests ever, which is a blend of Tempranillo with a significant 20% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo and matured in American oak barrels for some 29 months following the strictest Riojan tradition. It has some slightly animal leather aromas, cured meats, licorice and ripe black fruit. The wine rested for an additional 36 months in bottle before release, which polished its texture and allowed it to reveal fully-resolved tannins and tasty flavors. It is ready and easy to drink. 44,400 bottles produced.
