    The 2016 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard leaps from the glass with seductive orange blossom, nutmeg and candied peel scents over a core of lemon meringue pie, lime cordial and apricots. Medium-bodied, the palate offers plenty of elegantly styled fruit with a lively line of acid lifting the citrus and spice notions to a good, long finish. 244 cases produced.

    The 2015 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard has expressive notes of peach cobbler, lemon tart and pink grapefruit with suggestions of marzipan, allspice and ginger nut. It offers a lively structure in the medium-bodied mouth, injecting thirst-quenching freshness into the ripe, creamy flavors, finishing long.

    The 2014 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard (374 cases) is stunning. The wine saw 45% new French oak, but otherwise was treated identically to the Sonoma Coast bottling. This is from their three-acre block that has a special Hudson/Wente clone of Chardonnay planted. Smoky hazelnut notes suggest a Premier Cru from Meursault. The wine offers up poached pear and a touch of white peach in a full-bodied, delicious, sumptuous style with great acidity and a long, long finish. It is certainly one of the most impressive wines in the entire lineup and should drink nicely for 4-5 years.

    The 2013 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard (a well-known site founded by Lee Hudson in the 1980s) is a three-acre block that produced 370 cases in 2013, all Old Wente clone. Fifty percent new French oak barrels are used, and the wine is bottled without filtration. Crisp pineapple, honeysuckle, brioche and orange marmalade notes are followed by a full-bodied wine displaying hints of almonds as well as caramelized citrus. This beautiful, medium to full-bodied Chardonnay reveals the vintage’s terrific acidity, which gives definition and freshness to the wine. Drink now-2022.

    Another small cuvee is the 362 cases of 2012 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard, which displays complex, smoky, earthy, buttery notes and a creamy, full-bodied texture with loads of fruit intensity and richness. Drink this gorgeous wine over the next 4 or so years. Patz and Hall has a long and enviable track record, making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of the very finest single vineyards in Northern California. They rarely miss a beat, and the wines are “sure bets” regardless of vintage conditions. The current group of 2011s and early-released 2012s once again prove the consistency of these wines, which cut a very attractive synthesis in style between the more austere Burgundian model and the riper, more fruit-laden California style. As one can see, these are consistently well-made wines from Patz and Hall that merit significant attention from all serious wine consumers. The Pinot Noirs from Patz and Hall tend to be cold-soaked prior to fermentation for 3-4 days, and depending on the vintage, the grapes are usually uncrushed whole clusters with normally around 10-20% stems utilized.
