Readers looking for an impeccably well-made sweet wine should check out the 2001 Viognier Late Harvest made with frozen grapes from the Roll Ranch. It was picked at 42% natural sugar and retains 25% residual sugar. The acidity is high, and the wine pure, richly fruity, and well-made. It’s a curiosity, but a lot of fun. Ojai produced two outstanding Viogniers. The nectar-like, sweet 1996 Late Harvest Viognier exhibits an unctuous texture, and copious quantities of uncomplicated, chewy, sweet, honeysuckle fruit. It is a super late harvest Viognier to drink by itself at the conclusion of a meal.The Ojai Vineyard has been producing excellent to outstanding wines over recent years, and they seem intent on climbing to the top of California's qualitative pyramid.
