Pretty nose of sliced strawberries, nutmeg, watermelon and raw mushrooms. Silky, fruity and delicious, with a medium body and very fine-grained tannins. Elegant, with a citrusy tang at the end. Drink or hold.

This red is beginning to hit its stride, featuring fading cherry and berry fruit, mushroom and woodsy notes, menthol and iron accents. Still firm and austere on the finish, yet the excellent length indicates its full potential. The Marchesi di Barolo 2013 Barolo Riserva has been carefully aged and is ready to drink now. Or you could hold it longer if that is your pleasure. The bouquet exhibits sweet crème de cassis or cherry liqueur with tobacco and earthy sensations at the back. It is open-knit and quite generous at this point in time, although there is a slightly sour note on the finish that might disappear in due time. Some 8,000 bottles were released.

Maturing nicely, this red's plum, cherry, eucalyptus and iron aromas and flavors are coming to the fore. There are still dense, dusty tannins, yet even these have mellowed, making for a more harmonious experience. Excellent length. This edition of 8,000 bottles is part of the estate's late-release program that lets us dig back into the Marchesi di Barolo historic cellars. From a hot summer that saw ruthless, dry heat and strong winds from Africa carrying the red sands of the Maghreb, the 2012 Barolo Riserva has evolved into a very nice wine indeed, with licorice, dried currant, dried mint and iron ore. This is a terrific step back in time. It ends a bit heavy, but it has aged quite gracefully, so enjoy it now.
