The 2016 Roero Riserva Trinità is a lean-bodied wine with light ruby and garnet highlights. The wine shows some pretty fruit tones of cassis and sour cherry, as well as some bitter almond. This Riserva is lean-bodied and easy, with enough structure and acidity to pair with a cheesy lasagna or casserole.

Of these various wines from Malvirà, the 2015 Roero Riserva Trinità is certainly the most complete and integrated. This wine opens to a pretty garnet hue with faded amber highlights. The bouquet is smooth and soft, without the astringent and bitter notes we found in the other wines among these new releases. You can't escape those Nebbiolo tannins, but the wine shows a textured, tightly knit overall approach that works.

The 2011 Roero Riserva Trinità opens to large-scale intensity and a dark garnet color. The bouquet offers ripe fruit aromas and hints of oxidation that give this expression an immediate, near-term drinking window. Fruit is sourced from a single vineyard that is characterized by very sandy, well-draining soils.

The 2008 Roero Riserva Trinita is pure grace. Dark cherries, tar, smoke and incense are some of the notes that are woven together in this supple, juicy wine. The 2008 is especially soft and silky. It should drink well right out of the gate, but I won’t be suprised if it ages nicely. Of all the reds I tasted from Malvira this year, the Roero Riserva Trinita is the most successful. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Malvira, one of the top estates in Roero, can usually be counted on for wines of distinction. This year’s set of new releases, however, is the most uneven I have ever tasted from the winery. The whites are strong, but all of the reds I tasted (including some that didn’t make it into this report) are disappointing to various degrees, especially considering the estate’s long track record. The 2007 Roero Riserva Trinita opens with beautifully articulated candied cherries, crushed flowers, spices and menthol. This is the most pointed and focused of the estate's three Roeros in 2007. Freshly cut flowers and mint add lift on the energetic finish. This is another terrific showing from Malvira. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Malvira is one of Roero's most inspired producers.
