This young, perfumed, floral and light red produced exclusively with Garnacha grapes is simply called the 2017 Garnatxa Negra, the Catalán name of the variety. It's produced with grapes purchased from growers in the village of Batea. It fermented in stainless steel and half of the wine matured in oak foudres for six months. Clean, fresh and pretty straightforward, the palate is soft, with almost unnoticeable tannins and clean flavors that make it very easy to drink. 100,000 bottles produced.

There is a new entry level red from the village of Altea produced exclusively with Garnacha grapes, simply called 2015 Garnatxa Negra (the Catalan spelling of the grape) from grapes purchased from growers. It's a fresh, fruit-driven and unoaked light red fermented in stainless steel and kept in cement for a couple of months before bottling. There is a faint phenolic character here, over a mixture of red and black fruit, quite ripe with some flowers. I also tasted from a bottle that had been open for 24 hours and it had developed a tarry note. The palate shows austere tannins, medium bodied with a good length. Impressive for the price. 100,000 bottles in different lots.

Think of this as a Spanish Cote du Rh?ne coming from vineyards planted as far back as 1915. This is another up-and-coming area in Spain and importer Eric Solomon calls this 100% Grenache wine his Pinot Noir of Spain. I’m not sure I’d go that far, but there is a wonderful black cherry note in the wine and underlying minerality. Fresh, medium-bodied, rather round and pure flavors, with not a lot of complexity, but a very savory mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. It is certainly a great value.

Wow! $10 is the full retail, so I suspect readers may be able to purchase this beauty for a discounted price of $8-$9 a bottle. Made from vines planted in 1915, the 2013 Garnacha Negra comes from the village of Batea, where wine has been made since the 15th century. Eric Solomon partnered with Spaniard Nuria Altes to produce this remarkable, cool-climate, high-altitude Grenache with a Pinot Noir-like personality. Abundant notes of cranberries, red cherries, black currants and hints of forest floor and damp earth are followed by a medium-bodied wine with terrific fruit intensity and richness that can only be the result of these old vines. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a flowery perfume revealing aromas of forest floor, underbrush, sweet black cherries, raspberries and strawberries.
