The full-bodied 1997 Chardonnay (14.2% alcohol) reveals a tell-tale terroir-driven earthiness. Full-bodied and broodingly backward with citrus notes intermixed with earth overtones and spice, it is a chewy, full-bodied, powerful example of Chardonnay. This estate vineyard, located in the remote southwestern tip of Australia, a four and one-half hour drive southeast of Perth, proved to be a major surprise in my recent tastings of Australian wines. Frankland Estates' 1995 Chardonnay reveals a toasty, lavishly-oaked nose, bold, butterscotch-like flavors, and a dense, chunky, powerful palate with plenty of ripe fruit.
