More reserved than the exuberant Volnay Pitures from Maison Morey-Blanc, the domaine's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots unwinds to reveal notes of cherries, plums, burning embers, sweet soil tones and spices. Medium to full-bodied, it's muscular and nicely concentrated, with powdery tannins and chalky grip on the finish.

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is a definite success, displaying attractive aromas of plums, wild berries, dried flowers and a judicious framing of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, ample and satiny, with nice depth and dimension at the core, tangy balancing acids and a pleasing sense of completeness. It's a charming Santenots that will drink well in its youth.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots has a very elegant bouquet with perfumed red cherry and cranberry fruit, not as opulent as others that I have tasted, but perhaps more delineated and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine backbone, just missing a touch of complexity right on the finish where I would have liked a little more precision. I suspect this will improve in barrel and the finish will manifest more clarity.

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots, which was blended for me using a new and old barrel, has a crisp, black cherry and raspberry-scented bouquet with fine minerality already in evidence. The palate offers plenty of red cherry and wild strawberry fruit on the entry that distracts you from the sturdy structure beneath. Linear at the moment, but nicely controlled and harmonious on the finish, this Volnay has good potential.
